Course Overview

If you love your robots and you missed this class the last few times it's run, don't miss it this time! Marvel's Josh Herman demonstrates the tips and tricks he's used to model one of the world's most iconic superheroes in his Hard Surface Character Modelling 8 week CGWorkshop. Working mainly in Maya, he'll take you through his process and give you personal feed back on your own model, which you'll build alongside the rest of your online class.

Josh says, "Robots, mechs and sci-fi suits of armour. These each provide their own unique challenges and are quite different, but they all share something in common. They are characters. Characters are not cars, props, or buildings and require a different type of attention and focus. However, they do share a lot of things in common with cars, weapons, and props and can become a balancing act to create an appealing character."

Marvel modeller Josh will share his process and knowledge he’s learned from creating characters and robots from movies like Iron Man 3, The Avengers, Real Steel and Total Recall. He will show how to create a robotic character while focusing on things like proportion, shape, rhythm, silhouette and muscularity.

In the course you will make a waist up bust of a bipedal robot. This will include the head, upper torso and abdomen as well as the arms and hands. You'll be given concepts to choose from that range from relatively simple for a beginner, to more complex for advanced students. Other concepts or projects can be used for the course with Josh's approval.

Live webinar sessions will be run throughout the workshop so Josh can give you feedback on your work, and you can ask questions. These will be recorded and posted for those who can't make it.

"Josh is a natural teacher and it was a pleasure to attend this course, I will definitely attend future courses by this master of hardsurface modelling, and I cannot wait to put into practice all the skills he has taught me. Well worth the price and I am very pleased. It was hard work but also fun and rewarding." David Newton, student, Jan 2013.

"The opportunity to learn from a pro like Josh was truly unique, and to have your model being criticized by him is gold for people interested in this specific type of modelling." Marcio F. Fontenelle, student, Jan 2013

"This was an awesome class,I know how demanding it is when you're working full-time, so I really appreciate all of the time you put into the videos, and answering questions and providing feedback on the forum." Norbert Varga, student Sept 2012

"Josh's workshop taught me a lot more then I initially expected when I went. His lessons are very good show his workflow in a very extensive way, you get to see every step from start to finish. It was awesome to watch the workflow and learn from a truely amazing artist. If someone would ask me if I would take it again, in a heartbeat!" - Patrick van Rooijen, student Sept 2012

"Its not every day we get to interact with someone as experienced as you, and its been great. Its a bummer it has to end, as i have really enjoyed every minute of it." - Adam Shaw, student Sept 2012
