Review & Drills This is a self-graded quiz to see how you’re doing, but it’s also a great reference to use in your classroom. We’ll post more Classroom Tips ‘n Tricks in the Forum.
The 5 AAA modules allow students to customize their scenes by creating “extra” objects and animations for their presentations. We’ll also look at ways you can continue and increase your knowledge of 3ds Max. Students will be walked through the first two modules and then progress to the next three.
While working through the 1st and 2nd AAA modules (Phases of the Moon and Architectural Reconstruction of the Parthenon) you will get an appreciation for how the students in your class can use this innovative and exciting material to learn academic content. This content ranges from science, math, language arts and technology standards using computer animation for visual communication in a comprehensive, immersive, project-based learning environment.
Listed below are the objectives for this class. Some objectives will be repeated as you work through the 2 different modules:
* Introduction to the User Interface (UI)
* Introduction to Procedural Modeling
* Create and adjust lights
* Use Bitmaps as materials for objects
* Create new materials using 3D Procedural Maps
* Creating the illusion of “bumpiness” on objects
* Using Map Channels to create added realism
* Create 2D shapes
* Modeling terrain using modifiers
* Adding AEC Foliage
* Link objects
* Animate using Path Constraint
* Use the Curve Editor and Dope Sheet
* Creating repetitive or continuous motion
* Spline modelling and the Lathe Modifier
* Add and manipulate cameras to get several views for rendering
* Use the Array tool to make copies of the columns
* Assign Pre-Made Material
* Create the ground using the Displace modifier
* Merge a light. Copy the light and edit its parameters
* Introduction to keyframes
* Animate the camera with keyframes
* Display and edit the trajectory
* Make a preview
* Render Animations and still images
* View Animation
After completing this class, you will have:
* Received a fundamental introduction to the features of 3ds Max®
* Learned about the material offered in the AAA
* Created procedural models
* Created models using Splines and Modifiers
* Created original materials and textures
* Used Cameras
* Merged objects into a scene
* Applied several types of materials
* Set up a Path Animation
* Used the Curve Editor and Dope Sheet
* Set up lighting
* Rendered an animation
This may sound like a lot, but don’t worry. Pat will be taking everything step-by step so that you become comfortable using 3ds Max as a teaching tool.

Level of Ability
Students of all levels of ability in 3ds Max are welcome to enrol. Students need to be familiar with web navigation, browsing, email as well as be familiar with using a bulletin board system (such as CGTalk.com).
Software/Hardware Required
Minimum system requirements to install and operate 3ds Max software.
Students can download a 30-day trial of 3ds Max here.
Resources
Your copy of the Autodesk Animation Academy has all of the lessons and .max files that you’ll need to complete these projects. However, all of the necessary files are also duplicated and can be downloaded from this website. Any additional files that may be made during this course, such as a file made to answer a question, will also be available for download. |
