Leigh van der Byl
Leigh has spent the last 12 years working in visual effects studios around the globe, initially in a generalist role but soon after deciding to focus more specifically on surfacing. Following her humble beginnings in her native country of South Africa where she cut her teeth for several years on a variety of commercial and documentary VFX work, she moved on to the States where she racked up credits doing texturing, lookdev and lighting on a number of features, including the highly stylised noir comic film Sin City and the acclaimed Spanish fantasy drama, The Pan's Labyrinth.
Eventually moving to the United Kingdom, Leigh has spent the last six years working for some of Soho's top VFX vendors on numerous features, from the creature-heavy fantasy The Golden Compass, to the animated feature The Tale of Despereaux, to the final two installations in the Harry Potter saga, amongst many others. She's most recently finished an extended tour of duty painting hundreds of textures on Alfonso Cuaron's hotly-anticipated upcoming space epic, Gravity, at Framestore. And yet with more than 20 feature films to her name, she's somehow found the time to write numerous magazine articles, and contribute to a number of books on the subject of texture painting. This will also be her second CGWorkshop.
When she's stuck not behind a flickering screen re-arranging pixels in Mari and Photoshop, she's an avid photographer, musician, heavy metal concert attendee, Belgian beer enthusiast and globetrotting adventurer.
